What is Xfce?
Xfce is a lightweight desktop environment for unix-like operating systems. It aims to be fast and lightweight, while still being visually appealing and easy to use.
Xfce 4.2 embodies the traditional UNIX philosophy of modularity and re-usability. It consists of a number of components that together provide the full functionality of the desktop environment. They are packaged separately and you can pick and choose from the available packages to create the best personal working environment.
Xfce 4 can be installed on several UNIX platforms. It is known to compile on Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, Solaris, Cygwin and MacOS X, on x86, PPC, Sparc, Alpha.

Install Xfce in debian
#apt-get install xfce
This will install a meta package, which will install the core XFCE modules and scripts to get it to work.
There are many useful utilities that come with XFCE, to install these do
#apt-get install xfcalendar xfce4-iconbox xfce4-mixer xfce4-systray xfce4-toys xfce4-trigger-launcher xfprint4
If you want to install more packages install all the below packages using the following command
#apt-get install xfce4-appfinder xfce4-artwork xfce4-battery-plugin xfce4-clipman-plugin xfce4-datetime-plugin xfce4-diskperf-plugin xfce4-goodies xfce4-icon-theme xfce4-mcs-manager xfce4-mcs-plugins xfce4-notes-plugin xfce4-panel xfce4-sensors-plugin xfce4-session xfce4-terminal xfce4-utils
